As the President and CEO of Overachievers Anonymous, I would like to introduce you to a good friend of mine whom you have never met; space to breathe.
You may believe (like I did) that it is your job to hold our planet in orbit and make sure it spins around the sun, but there is another way.
What if I told you that you can do less and have more?
I know it sounds crazy, but just over 2 years ago I was regularly working 80 hours a week, 7 days a week. I was tired, resentful and bitter and at least once a day, I muttered, “WHY do I have to do everything?” At work, my team was half-assing their work, turning it in late or incomplete, but I would always put in late nights or weekends to fix it and then berate them. I felt like nothing was good enough, but the truth was my lack of personal boundaries was enabling people in all areas of my life to stay in jobs they weren’t meant for.
It got so bad that one day, during the busiest and most intense times of year, I closed my office door and googled, “How do you know what you're passionate about?”
It was a Thursday morning, not even 9am and feeling frustrated, I picked up my purse and stormed out of my office without straightening up my desk, turning out a light or saying goodbye to my staff.
I went to the beach and spent the days walking the beach, collecting shells and turning thoughts over in my mind. The one thought that kept coming back to me was that when you want to quit the business you created, there is no one to blame but you. I decided it was time for some changes and first thing that Monday morning I hired a coach.
I decided I will never work like that, treat people like that, or be that person again. On one of our first calls, I told my coach “I want to do less and have more.” I wasn’t referring to more things, as I am not much of a stuff person, but I wanted more life in my days.
More sleeping through the night.
I was committed to having everything I wanted while working less and I have that now! My home and office are a place of love and understanding, forgiveness and compassion, and happiness.
I want you to have more too. Now that you know it is possible, let’s talk about how this works.
Why Doing Less Works:
Doing less creates space in your life to receive inspiration so you can work from a place of flow. This is a place where things happen almost effortlessly.
How will everything get done?
This is a two-part answer: Boundaries and Flow.
Let’s talk about boundaries…..
Boundaries are a way you honor yourself. It is about taking care of yourself and loving yourself so you can show up as your best self. When you put everything and everyone before you, you end up cranky and resentful and everything is harder.
Where have you been overworking, at home and work, because it was easier to do it yourself then coach someone through it? These are the places you need to step back and evaluate. If this is happening at work, then it may be time to make some changes in who you delegate to or how you lead them. If it is happening at home, like with your kids, it may be time to get clear on your expectations to stop fixing and allow the natural consequences to happen (think lunches, homework, chores).
The magic of flow….
Flow is the natural result of healthy boundaries and allow you to do more in less time.
Have you ever done a task that would normally take you hours in just minutes? If so, this is flow and it happens when you are rested and filled up. You can’t access flow from a place of exhausted depletion.
This energy comes from love, love for self and all that is around you. Fear is a much darker lower energy and this is a place of resentment and guilt and fear.
How do you find your flow?
Doing less and playing more.
Taking that lunch break instead of eating at your desk.
Going to yoga or exercise class at the gym.
Leaving work when you feel tired not overworking and burning out.
Eating foods that fuel you.
Getting enough sleep at night.
Finding time to laugh with those you love.
Taking a walk in nature.
Share with me in the Facebook group what you are doing to find flow this week. I can’t wait to hear how taking time to rest and play leaves you feeling inspired!
